The WYC (Windsor Youth Center) is in the process of launching their Project Button Box, to help raise funds and promote awareness for the support of homeless youth in and around Windsor.

Project Button Box is a way for the community to support the outreach of the centre. Buttons are being sold for a donation of one dollar. The buttons include words that have been inspired by the concept of “what is home,” and the unique logo of the WYC.

The WYC is a relatively new concept to the city and is currently the only one of its kind. Pronounced “wick,” it is a small, homey establishment located at 1321 Wyandotte East that provides hot meals, a place to go, and the basic necessities that a youth may require to survive on the streets and away from their homes.

Those in need, ranging from the ages of 16-24, are provided with basic support including bus tickets, laundry, toiletries, snacks, extra clothing and more.

To many youth in and around Windsor, the “Wick” is a place to call home, a place where they can go to hang out with friends, to talk to someone and to share a nice hot meal as a “family.”

At the WYC, meals are served six days a week from Monday to Saturday. They operate from 5-10 pm, with dinner served at 6 pm.

WYC

The WYC relies on the help of the community and generous donors to stay afloat. Volunteers are always needed and welcomed, as well as food and monetary donations.

Currently they serve over a thousand meals a month and this number is increasing with the demand. It is estimated that there are currently 50-100 youth in Windsor on the street.

There is one button box currently located at the Green Bean Café, 2320 Wyandotte West, but within the next couple of weeks, the goal is to sprout the boxes into other locations around Windsor.

To make a donation of food, money, or supplies, please visit the WYC during regular business hours; 5pm-10pm every day, or contact them at donate@thewindsoryouthcentre.org and (226) 674-0006

The WYC has an ongoing need for non-perishable food items, fresh and frozen fruits and vegetables, Windsor Transit adult bus tickets, new socks and underwear, and monetary donations
